They Said

Frumpy dumpy nothing, dressed to blend right in

Once she wore tight clingy clothes, but that was said a sin

Quiet voice and teary eyes she ducks her head in shame

Once, she stood center stage, with angels’ voice she sang

“Stupid girl, you always want others to notice you

Selfish, useless silly child,” they said, and she thought it true

So now she sits with shoulders slumped and taps her wooden cane

and whispers silently to herself, “I must not dance in the rain”
